VoIP is the buzzword in IT circles these days because it offers many benefits over traditional telephone service. But many people are still confused about the difference between VoIP phone and conventional telephony. How can VoIP differ from a regular phone? How does it compare to traditional POTS (plain old telephone service)? How does IP Phone Service work?
Simply put, VoIP is telephone service delivered over the web.
To do that, the analog voice data is digitally encoded with digital codes called SIP trunks. When it comes time to convert the signal back into analog, the reverse process is initiated which means you now have telephone service with the web, just like a traditional analog landline.
But there are more benefits than just cost savings. A true VoIP phone system will reduce or eliminate all of the recurring fees associated with using conventional phone lines. Most VoIP providers charge by the minute, but there are still a few out there that charge by the kilo buck. But with a typical long-distance plan, you’ll save up to 50% compared to traditional phone calls made using a regular phone lines. In addition, your VoIP service provider can provide you with additional features such as faxes, voicemail, and even Internet faxes to name a few.
One other major advantage to utilizing cloud-based VoIP phone service
over traditional pbx systems is the lack of equipment requirement. Most VoIP providers bundle their services with PC-based software that is automatically installed on your computer or laptop. With this software, you’ll be able to take advantage of your VoIP provider’s features without having to install anything on your computer. The software also allows you to manage your phone list, which means less paper, more productivity! And while most cloud providers offer free calling plans, there are a few who offer attractive plans for monthly plans that range from free to $5.
Traditional PBX solutions, as VoIP phone service providers are sometimes called, usually require hardware such as dedicated circuits and routers. These devices must be installed in various locations throughout the business to accommodate incoming calls. In addition to the hardware, additional software is required to manage voice, data, fax, and ACD along with several other functions. This software needs to be customized to each business’s requirements.
Even if you do not currently have a high-speed internet connection, it is possible for you to use voip phone services without one.
